The Energetic Effect of a Total Solar Eclipse
My Eclipse Experience in Dallas
Where were you Monday, April 8, 2024? Were you caught up in the eclipse hoopla or were you sadly working at a job that would not allow you to take a break (yes, believe it or not hospitals function, call centers still operate, and emergency professionals were at the ready).
I have to admit that a few weeks ago as preparations were being made for the impending eclipse, I was dragging my feet. What could be so special about a solar eclipse anyway? Nevermind that the week before the solar eclipse we had a lunar eclipse and now that I think of it we had a lunar eclipse at the end of September of 2023. (There are two lunar eclipses annually, but due to timing and weather you might not see them). So really - isn’t it all overkill anyway? My family was checking in after work standing in the kitchen (doesn’t everyone have important conversations at the kitchen counter?) – the small town south of Dallas where my husband works was projected to grow by 200,000 people just for the solar eclipse in a few weeks. It’s a small town so where in the world do those people go? My husband had checked the local hotels (all sold out), and a nearby town was offering $900 a night for a Holiday Inn. That’s when it clicked – maybe there is something to this eclipse thing.
Fast forward, I had a family friend and his husband coming to town from Los Angeles specifically for the eclipse. I have to admit while we were thrilled to have them in town, part of me was still wondering, why all the hype? We met for dinner at an old Dallas restaurant (that the locals love and somewhere we expected tourists wouldn’t find, but they did). It was packed! A great meal with amazing company and so fun to catch up with old friends. To us the next day would be like any other - work, etc. while our friends had mapped out an eclipse watching party and praying the weather would cooperate.
The morning of the eclipse, I woke early with the sunrise, and the sunbeams hit my face as I walked our Cavalier, Arnie, around the block to greet his friends. I was relieved the sun was shining. I spent the morning with a surge of extra energy. I found myself cleaning, purging, and literally doing DEEP spring cleaning in a myriad of places, despite the fact that I had not planned to spend the day doing this. In any case, around noon I started to slow down and wrap up the cleaning. Arnie started to get a little antsy. And about an hour before totality I found myself alone in our back yard.
While many want to watch the eclipse with others, loved ones, friends, I found myself really wanting to take in the moment in solitude. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure what to expect. So I took my water, a journal, my sunglasses, my phone, my eclipse glasses and a towel to the back yard. I sat in a chair to look up with my eclipse glasses on – and soon realized — my only plans for the next hour were to lay in the grass! WOW – it was about forty minutes to go and when I looked up I was amazed at what I saw…. the color, the moon moving in front of the sun….it looked like little moons. MAGIC! Mind BLOWN (btw if you missed it, go google ‘solar eclipse' and watch what happens on your screen, it’s almost as magical as the real thing!)
So I settled in and watched the entire thing unfold! It was sheer magic. We had clouds and at times it would give my eyes a break from staring at the eclipse in real time. At the time of TOTALITY – it was SO COOL, a sun with an orange ring, and during totality you could even take off your glasses. I was most struck by the fact that the clouds had cleared and appeared as if they were hovering and moving as the milky way tends to, and opened up for the solar eclipse. Arnie even wanted to come outside to see what was happening.
A few things came to mind as I reflected on my eclipse experience:
It was dark, but not as dark as I expected. It was more like just as the sun sets.
The crickets did chirp but they didn’t start chirping until after totality.
The neighborhood was not quiet as I expected. Instead you could hear kids and neighbors ooh and ahh at the sights above.
It felt like a rallying cry that we need each other and the universe recognized it.
And there’s more to that than just my opinion, let me share what I found after a little research.
How does a solar eclipse affect your energy?
Eclipses can have a significant impact on the way you feel. During the days leading up to and the days following the eclipse you might have experienced bigger emotions, a surge of energy, or a “gut feeling” to make changes in life.
They represent a moment of darkness or introspection followed by the emergence of new light or insights, and are the perfect opportunity to slow down and take time for setting intentions, initiating new beginnings, and embracing personal growth.
Understanding the potential effects of a solar eclipse on your energy and motivation can be such a valuable tool in your pursuit to live your best life. By paying attention to changes in your mood, energy levels, and inspiration during celestial events, like solar eclipses, you have an opportunity to deepen your self-awareness. They can also have a profound spiritual effect, for me the eclipse was a, dare I say magical, experience of watching the universe at work. One that reminded me of how much I have to be grateful for and a reminder of how much stronger we as humans are when we join together in community.
In my estimation, the 2024 solar eclipse brought people together whether you saw the physical gathering of people or you didn’t. Since that moment, the energy has shifted, positivity is increasing, and to see the documentation on social media of posts, and eclipse glasses, and pictures, and comments, you can’t deny the source energy drawing us together towards our best lives.
