Summer Morning Routine

Does waking up feeling refreshed and excited to get the day underway sound like a dream?  These days I do, butI have to confess that was not always the case! In fact, I was known to be rather lethargic and some days I couldn’t muster the energy to do more than tackle my to do list.  Much of my energy comes from paying attention to sleep, rest, nutrition, mindfulness and what the pace of my week overall seems to entail.  So sure, everyday I make adjustments and some days my body is more able than others.  We are designed this way for a reason! And in the last few months I have worked hard to LISTEN to what my body tells me it needs!

Individuality in your Morning Routine

You may be due for a tune up, trust me though: when you listen to your body you will have more zest, more pep in your step and more gratitude for the way you can and do show up daily.  I have also taken a deep dive into what makes me tick (I used the My Human Design App to learn more about my Human Design, - I recommend you do it as well.)

I am a creature of routine. I thrive with routines so that my mind can actively engage in the necessary challenges ahead, not the repetitive routine that I now embrace daily, which is why a multiple step routine (like you’ll see below) works for me

But, before I get ahead of myself, I will admit, even as someone who thrives on routine, it has taken me most of 2024 to really feel confident and effective and proud of the morning routine I have established. It requires discipline and practice. Don’t expect yourself to be perfect when adopting a new routine!  As for the evening routine - that’s still a work in progress, and the evening wind down has me thinking creatively about establishing a more formal routine.  Stay tuned, perhaps in a few months I will be able to share an evening routine too.

Example of a Healthy Morning Routine

So what does my morning look like and perhaps you may even ask “why does it matter?”  Truthfully your routine is just that, YOUR routine.  It is my hope that perhaps after reading mine there might be a few things that you want to add to your routine or change or even take out to make more space for a peaceful gentle flow into the days.   Before I share, I do think it is worthwhile to share that as a school aged child, shoot up until my 40’s I HATED mornings! I was a night owl, I loved to stay up late and the later I stayed awake, the more the struggle of the morning bit me.  As I learned this about myself, I have come to LOVE waking up and watching the sun crest over the treeline.  It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, and often it’s just me. I wouldn’t trade this part of the day for anything.

My morning routine

Some days I have to set an alarm, truthfully I try not to. I want to wake as the light hits our bedroom windows (east facing).  I get it some days we have to get up early before the sun rises.  Regardless of wake time, I purposefully set aside an hour to ninety minutes to not rush, to slow down, to embrace the day and to set the tone for what lies ahead.

  • I stretch in bed and move my body before I ever even set my feet to the floor.

  • If I must look at my phone I only look at the time or turn the alarm off.

  • I greet Arnie, our beloved cavalier king charles, who does sort of nudge me when he’s ready to get up too.  We stretch together, snuggle, and then we bound out of bed and head barefoot to the bathroom to grab my glasses and then to the back yard to look east at the sunrise.

  • WATER WATER WATER.  It is the first thing I put in my body.  (It used to be coffee and let’s face it, after sleep your body is dehydrated).  It matters what you put in your body, so I strongly urge you to put something natural in your body first.

  • Arnie gets a treat while I take a few of my supplements.  I start with Zallevo’s Fortitude 85 (helps with mood, stress, balance, and vitality; has vitamins and minerals in it), NAD+, NAC, and Pancreatic Enzymes which all help with cellular health and energy and to reduce inflammation in the body.

  • I make warm lemon water (again more water) to drink while Arnie gets his breakfast.

  • I sit, read, and mediate. This year, I purposefully try to wait 30 minutes before getting on my phone and I no longer turn the news on (unless it is necessary weather, etc.).

  • I do my daily solitaire challenges and the New York Times Wordle; I then read my daily scripture and a few other meditations (My Human Design, etc.)

  • As I am finishing up my readings, I make ONE cup of coffee (Scout and Cellar of course) and throw Arnie’s donut or golf ball for him to retrieve.  He could do this for hours but it is typically just the amount of time for me to finish my coffee.

  • Then it’s time to throw on some yoga pants and a t-shirt, Arnie’s patience waiting on me has waned. We are off on our morning walk.  I leave my phone at home and we walk a half mile to a mile in the neighborhood.

  • We return with elevated heartbeats and Arnie is craving ice cubes.  So he gets ice treats and I mix up my Zallevo Tri-fecta (Burn, Evibe and Collagen).  We dance in the kitchen as I drink it down and we cool off.

  • I head off to my office with Arnie on my heels. He settles in next to my desk or in the chair looking out the window. I tackle email for just a few minutes. Depending on the day, I get up from my desk for fifteen minutes of yoga or I work on a few smaller projects for about thirty minutes.

  • I then walk back to the kitchen to mix up a protein shake (Zallevo of course). I always mix in a few ice cubes (cue Arnie’s treats) and a little cinnamon.  Then I usually eat a piece of fruit with my shake, take my omega 3’s and a few other supplements.

  • Depending on time I might water a few plants or throw in a load of laundry or head to the shower or back to my desk.

As my morning has progressed from slow paced to more energized I feel prepared to tackle the day.  The energy gradually intensifies, I have taken time for myself, I have grounded my feet in the grass as Arnie is outside before breakfast, and I have had time to embrace the beauty of the day (and this time of year: the heat).

If I had to summarize my MOST important pieces of my morning: gratitude for the day, WATER, movement, and protein all within the first hour or two of being up.  Sure there are days where it isn’t as easy but I can assure you, I am moving, putting water in my body, and Arnie and I are going for a walk (rain or shine).

This routine has changed how I show up for myself. I’d love to hear what you do every morning.
